James C. is a 35-year old single male, who is the primary caretaker for his mother who is elderly and chronically ill. He is also HIV positive. James was employed in the field of human resources and business consulting until he was laid off when his company made cutbacks. “Fortunately, I had taken a part-time job a few weeks earlier to make extra money. I continued to look for new work, but had no success in my professional field. Over the last 18 months, Mom has been in and out of the hospital and nursing care almost constantly. It forced me to work less and I eventually had to stop to care for her myself. Unfortunately, her health never improved and actually got worse over this past winter. It finally declined to the point that she had to be hospitalized a couple of weeks ago. She's now in permanent nursing home care. The toll of my efforts to look after my mother has been significant. I am now facing a new and very pressing challenge. I've fallen significantly behind on my rent and have recently been given a pending eviction notice. I've reached out to friends for help. None have the means to help correct my debt, but they are helping me look for resources. Others are also working with me to find work both long term and short term to help make ends meet. I sincerely hope that some generous person associated with your organization would be willing to provide some assistance to me in correcting this debt so that I can rebuild my life.”
